Diego is a member of the design team for Elevate Teaching’s newest pipeline initiative – the Teaching Pathways Fellowship, a fellowship program for BIPOC college students interested in pursuing careers in teaching.
Diego is a sophomore at UC Berkeley who plans to become a teacher. As a first generation, latino, queer child of undocumented farmworkers from the Central Valley, Diego wants to use his future profession as a platform for personal and relationship-based growth with other young students who come from similar historically marginalized backgrounds. As someone passionate about pursuing a career in teaching, he has been struggling to find community with other people who are interested in teaching as a career, and he believes this is due to the bad reputation that teaching gets. Diego was drawn to Elevate Teaching’s Student Advisory Council because he wants to gain first-hand experience from people in the teaching profession who share his same passions and frustrations for the American public education system. Diego is a volunteer with UC Berkeley’s CollegeCorps, where he has been working as a tutor in several Berkeley public elementary schools. He is also the Student President for CollegeCorps this academic year.
